Sassafras Lowrey teaches and lectures at schools, conferences and for community groups on issues ranging from queer storytelling to the epidemic of LGBTQ youth homelessness. Hir visual art has been showcased in conferences and galleries across the country, including the “Fresh Meat” Gallery in San Francisco, “TransGiving” in Los Angeles and the legendary “Southern Comfort” conference in Atlanta.
An accomplished storyteller, ze was an original member of “The Language of Paradox” founded and directed by Kate Bornstein, has toured regionally with “The Femme Show” and Dixon Place’s 17th annual HOT festival of queer culture. Sassafras is a contributor to numerous anthologies including: LGBTQ: America Today, The Femme Coloring Book, Gendered Hearts, and Visible: A Femmethology.
Ze is the editor of the Kicked Out anthology which brings together the voices of current and former homeless LGBTQ youth. Its foreword is written by Judy Shepard (mother of Matthew Shepard) and the anthology has been endorsed by PFLAG-National.
In addition to the below workshops, lectures and presentations, Sassafras designed and taught “Gender Revolution: Explorations in Gender Transgression” at Portland State University as part of the revolutionary Chiron Studies program. Other notable appearances have included The Portland Zine Symposium, Bard College, NYAC’s (National Youth Advocacy Coalition) conference in Washington DC, Sylvia’s Place emergency LGBT shelter in Manhattan, and The Queer Spirit Camp.
